چکیده

Current theoretical treatments of mode splitting and scattering loss resulting from subwavelength scatterers attached to the surface of high-quality-factor whispering-gallery-mode microresonators are not satisfactory. Different models proposed for distinct scatterer regimes cannot be reconciled. In addition, many experimental results are difficult to understand within the existing theoretical framework. Here, we develop a unified approach that applies to an arbitrary number of scatterers. Comparison with the existing theoretical models reveals their applicable conditions and limits. Moreover, many new understandings on the mode splitting and scattering loss are achieved, which are supported by numerical and experimental evidence.

Ringing phenomenon based whispering-gallery-mode sensing

Highly sensitive sensing is one of the most important applications of whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators, which is usually accomplished through a tunable continuous-wave laser sweeping over a whispering-gallery mode with the help of a fiber taper in a relative slow speed. It is known that if a tunable continuous-wave laser sweeps over a high quality whispering-gallery mode in a fast ...

Azimuthal-order variations of surface-roughness-induced mode splitting and scattering loss in high-Q microdisk resonators.

We report an experimental observation of strong variations of quality factor and mode splitting among whispering-gallery modes with the same radial order and different azimuthal orders in a scattering-limited microdisk resonator. A theoretical analysis based on the statistical properties of the surface roughness reveals that mode splittings for different azimuthal orders are uncorrelated, and v...

Universal nonlinear scattering in ultra-high Q whispering gallery-mode resonators.

Universal nonlinear scattering processes such as Brillouin, Raman, and Kerr effects are fundamental light-matter interactions of particular theoretical and experimental importance. They originate from the interaction of a laser field with an optical medium at the lattice, molecular, and electronic scale, respectively. These nonlinear effects are generally observed and analyzed separately, becau...

Review of Applications of Whispering-Gallery Mode Resonators in Photonics and Nonlinear Optics

We review recent advances in the application of dielectric whispering-gallery (WG) resonators in optics and photonics, tracing the growth of the technology from the experiments with freely flying spherical droplets of transparent liquids to integrated on-chip microresonators. Both passive (such as filters) and active (such as lasers) whispering-gallery-mode (WGM)-based devices are discussed. Pr...

Detecting single viruses and nanoparticles using whispering gallery microlasers.

There is a strong demand for portable systems that can detect and characterize individual pathogens and other nanoscale objects without the use of labels, for applications in human health, homeland security, environmental monitoring and diagnostics. However, most nanoscale objects of interest have low polarizabilities due to their small size and low refractive index contrast with the surroundin...
